Man Dies Following Thetford Taser Incident

Vermont State Police will be holding a press conference this morning concerning an incident in Thetford. The briefing is related to the VSP press release:

On 6/20/12 at approximately 3:15pm, the Vermont State Police at Bradford were contacted by Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center regarding a suicidal subject that was making threats to harm himself and others in Thetford, Vt.

Troopers from the Bradford barracks responded to the subject’s residence in Thetford and attempted to initiate contact with him. The subject moved between the residence and a wooded area nearby over a period of several hours.

At approximately 6:23pm a Trooper made contact with the subject outside the residence. The Trooper displayed his firearm and gave verbal commands to the subject. As the Trooper spoke with the subject, the Trooper transitioned from his firearm to his taser. The subject then advanced in the Troopers direction refusing to comply with the Trooper’s directives. The Trooper discharged his taser at the subject.

The subject was placed into custody and transported via Upper Valley Ambulance to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

The subject later died at DHMC. An autopsy is scheduled for 1:00pm on Thursday 6/21/12 in Concord, NH.

The name of the subject is being withheld pending notification of family.
