Vermont Strong Guv Visits Woodstock

Gabby Hazen of Woodstock posed with Governor Shumlin

Governor Peter Shumlin arrived in Woodstock this afternoon in the pouring rain, not unlike what Vermont experienced as Tropical Storm Irene sat on our state for a good 24 hours a year ago.

Despite the rain, a good round-up of Woodstock Village Trustees and Woodstock Selectboard members gathered under a tent so that the Governor might acknowledge their efforts to keep Woodstock “strong” following Irene.

He gave a short pep talk emphasizing the need to keep helping those who might still be struggling a year later as a result of the damaging flooding that occurred here and elsewhere throughout Vermont.

Governor Shumlin also delivered to Town Manager Phil Swanson a “I Am Vermont Strong” license plate which Swanson said he would hang in the Town Hall offices for all to see. Swanson has been the coordinator for the majority of all projects resulting from Irene and has had to deal with mountains of paperwork as he has threaded his way through the Federal Emergency Management Agency system to bring dollars back to Woodstock.

The “Vermont Strong” license plates are being used as a fundraiser to help pay for Irene victims continuing needs. They can be purchased at DMV offices and can be affixed to the front bumpers of Vermont registered vehicles for a year.Shumlin’s stop on the Village Green preceded an Irene fundraising golf tournament and reception at the Woodstock Country Club being hosted by former Woodstock resident and current PGA golf player Keegan Bradley.
