DATE/TIME: 3/20/13
VIOLATION: Craigs List rental scam

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

Recently several residents of the Bethel and Barnard area have reported a rental
scam on Craigslist. This scam involves renting a home in Barnard.

The supposed owners have a story that explains that they had to suddenly leave the area and are renting their home. They are willing to do all the paperwork through e mail
and then have the renter send them a deposit through Western Union.

They claim that on receipt of the deposit a key to the apartment house will be sent to the renter.

This is a scam and prospective renters should be aware. Whenever an owner or property manager will not meet a perspective renter in person people should be wary. Further a renter should never send money in advance of seeing the apartment and gaining access. Perspective renters should be aware that this scam has occurred before in this area and renters should scrutinize online rental ads throughout the twin states.
