Arrest Made in November Pedestrian-Vehicle Incident

CITY, STATE OF RESIDENCE: Meredith, New Hampshire


On this date and time, Vermont State Police received a 911 call advising of a car vs. pedestrian accident on U.S. Route 5 near the Interstate 91SB off ramp in the Town of Hartland (Windsor County) Vermont. Vermont State Police were advised that the vehicle that collided into the pedestrian fled the scene of the accident.

Vermont State Police arrived on scene and observed a Dodge 3500 truck bearing New Hampshire registration 6103AG pulled off onto the break down lane of U.S. Route 5. Hartland Fire Department personnel advised that the pedestrian that was struck had already been transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center to treat injuries that were sustained as a result of the accident.

The first person on the scene was the Barnard Town Constable Wesley Henning who advised State Police of the following: Constable Henning advised that the male pedestrian ran out of fuel in his truck and had to pull off to the side of U.S. Route 5 in Hartland. Constable Henning advised that the pedestrian was attempting to add fuel to his truck when a vehicle side swiped him and proceeded to drive away without rendering aid.

The male pedestrian was identified as Dean Mason of Meredith, New Hampshire. Vermont State Police made contact with Mr. Mason at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and he advised the following has occurred: Mr. Mason advised that he ran out of gas so he had to pull off to the side of road. Mr. Mason advised that he was able to get a ride to Mike’s Mobil Station down the road and fill up a small container of gas. Mr. Mason advised that while filling his truck up, a mid-sized, black in color sedan, possible a Honda or Nissan squared up to him and accelerated towards him. Mr. Mason advised that he attempted to jump into the bed of his truck, but the sedan struck him sending him flying through the air. Mr. Mason advised that the black sedan never even hit its brakes as it drove off. Mr. Mason sustained significant injuries to include a compound fracture of his femur and head injuries.

Vermont State Police are looking for any help in locating the vehicle that struck Mr. Dean Mason. The vehicle involved should have front windshield damage, hood damage, and passenger window damage. The vehicle is believed to be a mid-sized black in color sedan, possible a Honda or Nissan. Any information regarding this incident should be reported immediately to the Vermont State Police-Royalton Barracks. Vermont State Police also encourage the person operating the vehicle in this incident to turn themselves in immediately as they are facing possible criminal charges.

After months of investigation Vermont State Police developed a strong lead in the case which resulted in the confession of 25 year old David W. Hook of Hartland (Windsor County) Vermont. David Hook was subsequently arrested on May 2nd, 2013 at 2130 hours and charged with Felony LSA and Negligent Operation. David Hook was processed at the Hartford Police Department and released on a criminal citation to appear in Windsor County Superior Court, Criminal Division on July 2nd, 2013 at 0800 hours to answer to the above charges.
