INCIDENT/VIOLATION: Motor vehicle Accident – Fatal

UPDATE:  Based upon the investigation of the above listed fatal crash, the Woodstock Police Department, with assistance from the Vermont State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, has determined that the cause of the crash was due to Operator Farewell allegedly crossing the center line into the East bound lane on Route 4 as he traveled West and struck the vehicle operated by the deceased operator, Sawyer, as she was traveling East.

Based upon the findings of the investigation, on 06/22/13 Operator Timothy Farewell, 46, of Enfield Center, was issued a citation to appear in VT District Court on July 30, 2013 at 0800 hours to answer to the charge of Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On May 16, 2013 at approximately 0605 hours Woodstock Police responded to a motor vehicle crash on US Rte 4 in Woodstock, VT, involving a white Box Truck, Owned by Carrolls, LLC, of Lebanan, NH, operated by Timothy Farewell, 46,  of Enfield Center, NH  and a silver Dodge Neon, operated by Norma Sawyer, 84, of Bridgewater, VT.

Preliminary investigation indicates that one of the vehicles involved crossed the center line causing the vehicles to impact.  Both vehicles left the road way and came to rest over the embankment adjacent to the Outtaquechee River.

Sawyer appears to have died on impact at the scene.  Farewell sustained possible minor injuries and was transported to DHMC.  A passenger in the Dodge Neon, Laura Robinson, 75, also from Bridgewater, sustained possible injuries and was transported to DHMC.  Her condition is unknown at this time.

Woodstock Fire and Ambulance responded to the scene.  Department of Motor Vehicles Enforcement, a state medical examiner, and Vermont State Police crash reconstruction team also responded to the scene to assist.

This investigation continues and anyone with any information regarding this crash is asked to contact Officer Mark Donka at 802-457-1420.

Did the police mention what caused the box truck driver to cross the center line? Did they address cell phone use–either to indicate it was a factor or not a factor? These days, I think it’s important to note that just as accident reports normally note road conditions, speed, possible alcohol use, etc.

    • What you see is what was issued. We give you exactly what the police give us.

But, yes it would be good to know additional details in the future particularly about cell phones. However, like everything there is a process. We are appreciative of now getting timely releases from WPD and are sure they will work to include further details as they can provide them. WEB

Wouldn’t the appropriate charges be Vehicular Homicide (death that results from the negligent operation of a vehicle)? It seems to me that Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle skips the fact that this negligence resulted in Norma Sawyer’s death and injured Laura Robinson.
